Name Game

Every time I discuss my friends with my hubby and others, I find myself clarifying which individual I am talking about. I realized I did not have this problem when I was in Florida. There were two of us with the same name in Florida, so we just went by our last names. Whereas up here, I have quite a few friends, acquaintances, and coworkers with the same name. It all becomes rather confusing.

I have my Florida Kevin R, my lunch buddy Kevin R, and my friend's boyfriend Kevin. My coworker's spouse Sarah, my coworker Sarah, my friend Sarai, and my other friend Sara. My guy friend Aaron and my girl friend Erin, who both have the same middle initial and last name. Then my hair stylist Erinn. Apparently with my accent, no one is sure when I'm discussing Dawn or Don. Which is fine since there is my coworker Don, or our volunteer Don G. or Don W. I'm sure I have the count wrong, but there are 3 Steve's and 2 Jeff's who have influenced our work area.

Basically, too many people with same name. It becomes rather confusing. I don't remember it being this difficult when I worked for a bigger system and lived in a bigger area. I though it was interesting to note.

Maybe you have a wider circle of the same age groupings. When my Catherine was Catie Beth, her preschool had 5 (yes, five) other Katies: Katie K., Katie C, etc. But since mine was Catie Beth, she didn't have to use an initial. Maybe, like our ancestors, we should use descriptions, although you've already started: "Lunch Kevin," "Sarai's Kevin," "Florida Kevin," "Baseball Don," Fireman Don," Directory Dawne." Heh, I'll stop there. How many Delias do you know?

You're my only Delia ever.

But we had a Delia at THCPL. Do you remember Jane English? Her real name was Delia, but nobody called her that. They called her by her middle name, Jane (her choice). Personally, I like Delia better than Jane.

I do the same thing - Melissa S and Melissa K, Lisa B and Lisa U, Jan and Jane and Janet, Nancy Ma, Nancy Mo, and Nancy S, Lynn in England and Lynn Hoffman, Mike and Michael and Lynn's Michael, Jess and Jessica, Chelle's Roger and Dawn's Roger... It can be a pain!

Sandy at work is the worst to talk to, though, becaus she will just start talking about Lisa and I have to say, "Lisa Upchurch, Lisa Bartusik, Lisa Bordner, or your sister Lisa?" She doesn't even try to differentiate like the rest of us! Kay Gregg or Kay Spears? Michael Clegg or your brother Michael? Sometimes I'll go half a conversation thinking she's talking about someone else!
