Since several of my friends and I are reading the Sookie Stackhouse books, I thought I would bring the debate out to the public. Now, Becky and I are notorious for our good-natured but determined arguments on Goodreads. During the Twilight phenom, I was Team Edward and she was Team Jacob. I want to throw the discussion out for everyone to respond about Sookie. The next Sookie book will be released in May and with it some hopeful progression in Sookie's love life. There have been many men...Bill, Sam, Eric, Alcide, Calvin, and Quinn. Who do you think she should be with in the end? I know this book is not the final in the series, but with each book, our opinions have altered or remained intact.
Initially I did not like Bill. I found him distant and lacking in his love for Sookie, but I was very intrigued by Eric and his responses to her. I know Eric is selfish and is lacking in his regard, but after reading the fourth book and seeing his reactions to remembering the missing time with her, I think he could possibly be a strong candidate as the man for her. After Bill's multiple betrayals, I believed there was no explanation to redeem the character. The point to remember is both of Bill's betrayals were caused by his inability to deny the demands placed on him as a vampire. I hate to say this, he had no control in those circumstances. Since then, he has continued to try to save Sookie and his professions of love have stirred my heart. The Weres and shapeshifters have held no appeal to me through the entire series.
I don't know how to explain it. I have always enjoyed the vampires in stories since watching Buffy. I was Team Edward during the Twilight phase. Now with Sookie, I am torn between Eric and Bill, both vampires. Both love her in their own ways, but both can hurt her terribly. Who do you think Sookie should choose in the end? Let the debate begin.

Well, I've gotta come out on Bill's side in this. Yes, there are not great things, but I still think he loves her with as much of him as a vampire can love. Everyone else has his own agenda and Sookie is not top on the list. A discussion the other day about what might be on a woman's (or man's) "must have" or "must not" mate lists made me remember that way back when (after one experience) "putting me first" made my must have list. (And putting him first was on my list anyway.) Of course, we may have not even met Sookie's guy yet!
I still haven't begun Dead to the World yet but I should catch up to you soon. I was okay with Bill but I liked Sam better in Dead Until Dark. I was less of a Sam-fan after the maenad affair in Living Dead in Dallas. I really liked Alcide in Club Dead--and, although I 'understand' Bill's actions in that book, I don't think a romantic relationship could recover from those events. From what I've read so far, I think Eric is incredibly hot and tempting but I haven't seen him as a true love-interest. Since I'm a few books behind, I'll probably have more thoughts after I catch up.
I'm almost finished with Book 4. As of right now, Bill is out for me. I can't stand the silent treatment! I like Eric for the short term, & can't wait to see how book 4 wraps up! If we're thinking long term: I'm liking the possibility of Sam (Yes, I know, Team Jacob!) or Alcide. Both have the base of friendship, & both have her best interest at heart.
