Some Good News

I had a mini-procedure this week, so the docs could humiliate me a little further, sorry, I mean, run seven tests at one time. Seriously, the tests were truly embarrassing. The doc sat Becky and I down to explain what they found and didn't find. The good news is the site of my injury during the last surgery looks beautiful. Everything has healed nicely, hence that is not causing my current symptoms.

The doc gave an ambiguous diagnosis. My "organ" is overly sensitive and overreacting from the trauma it suffered during the injury. They could actually see this on my test, but they feel it's rather minuscule. As someone who deals with it daily, I don't feel it's minuscule, but okay. The doc believes with time and natural healing, the organ will normal out. Of course, there is a surgery they can do to make everything better, but I would prefer not to go through it. Also, I can do stuff to help it along, like take meds everyday and remove caffeine from my diet.

What? Caffeine is my addiction that helps me through the everyday. I have given up caffeine products, like coffee and soda, before for Lent, but knowing 6 weeks was my goal didn't make the cravings stop. How can I do it for an indeterminate amount of time? I know it's not forever, but they don't know how long it will take for my symptoms to improve.

So far this week, I have not stopped for my morning coffee. Yes, I can feel it. I have kept my soda intake to two a day. Hopefully, I can cut one of those out this coming week. So, some good news and some bad news. And some seriously bad news for those who have to interact with me, sans caffeine.

Lent Season

Most of you know I am a very religious person, so I take Lent season very seriously. Last year, I gave up my addiction to coffee. It was difficult to do. Painful in many ways, but it was nothing in comparison to this year. I tried my hand at avoiding caffeinated sodas. This sounds like it's no big deal because I can drink soda, just not caffeinated ones. If you know me, Pepsi and Coke are daily staples in my life. I can chug one down easily. Sprite and 7Up are not the same.

This year I discovered that it can be hard to find restaurants that serve Sprite or sweet iced tea. I know, it's shocking! I've had to come prepared to gatherings with friends to insure I had a drink. I also learned I can smell Pepsi from across the table. It is a cruel world when you can smell it, but can't have it. I have craved it from day one. Certain people, who I won't name, have flaunted their sodas in front of me. They owe me a soda next week.

Which leads to my point. Lent ends on Sunday. I can finally have my first glorious taste of Pepsi again. It will be a wonderful moment. I just hope it doesn't upset my tummy the way the coffee did last year.

Caffeine Addict

It's time I admit a problem of mine. I have a horrible addiction to caffeine. For Lent last year, I gave up coffee and succeeded in not drinking any until Easter. I am back to my morning brew, but have only had more than one cup a handful of times this year. For the coming Lent season, I am debating giving up all forms of soda. This is becoming dangerous territory for me. I am honestly unsure if I can handle giving up the soda.

I determined my addiction began in Tampa and was pleased to find proof to my theory. I have always chugged sodas. I honestly can't remember when I didn't crave them. My parents used to limit our intake growing up but once I was on my own, I always had soda in the fridge.

I did not become a coffee drinker until I worked for the library in Tampa. There was always a pot brewing in the back and everyone was always drinking. I sort of fell into it. At one point, I even offered to help in the coffee-making rotation. After my first horrible brew, I was asked to never make it again. Starbucks, Seattle's Best, and Indigo became my friend. When I moved up north, one of my friends gave me a gift card as a farewell gift to keep my supply going.

Reading the report was a little scary in seeing how many people take caffeine tablets. I have thankfully avoided those, even on my worse days. So here's to my plan of going off soda in the next month.
